Japan Airlines (JAL) Group is integrating security measures with Palo Alto Networks products and services, and is working on strengthening cloud security and automating operations using AI. Palo Alto Networks announced this on February 28th. In 2014, JAL experienced a security incident in which personal information was leaked due to unauthorized logins to the “JAL Mileage Bank” and unauthorized access to the customer information management system. JAL introduced various products and services to strengthen security, but a large number of alerts were generated from the various tools, and they were overwhelmed with how to deal with them.
For this reason, they decided to integrate security products and services, and considered solutions based on the two keywords of “from point defense to surface defense” and “visualization, automation, and integration,” and selected Palo Alto Networks, which has a solution similar to these. The JAL Group first introduced the next-generation firewall “PA-Series” and “Cortex XDR,” which provides endpoint defense and threat detection and response, in 2018. From 2021 to 2023, the company will also introduce the cloud-based “Prisma Access” as a security measure to respond to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a secure access service edge (SASE) environment. From 2024, these security measures will be deployed at overseas offices and airport bases, and network security will be transitioned to a SASE-based system. Currently, more than 90% of the terminals used throughout the group are integrated with

Regarding this security measure, Adachi Taichi, Group Manager of the Security Planning Group, System Management Department, JAL Digital Technology Headquarters, explained, “Individually optimized defense is like a point defense, which is relatively prone to creating weak points. Because attackers target weak points, we thought that the entire JALグループ needed to move to a unified surface defense with a strong security level. We make invisible attacks visible, automate responses, and integrate them. Implementing this as a surface across the entire group is the concept of integration.”
